The Highest-Leverage Playbook
Hard Module 2 is a compliment. Here is how to answer it.
You have a couple of days, not a couple of months. This guide skips the encyclopedia and keeps only the tactics that move real points on the hardest questions: how the adaptive test works, how to pace it, and the specific plays for Math and for Reading & Writing.
Part 1
Know the game you are playing
The digital SAT is section-adaptive. In each section (Reading & Writing, then Math), everyone takes the same Module 1. How you do on Module 1 decides whether your Module 2 is the easier or the harder version, and only the harder Module 2 path unlocks the top score range. Two things follow from this:
- Module 1 accuracy is sacred. Careless mistakes early are the most expensive mistakes on the whole test. Slow down slightly on Module 1 and bank the easy points cleanly.
- If Module 2 suddenly feels brutal, celebrate. Harder questions mean you performed well on Module 1 and your score ceiling is high. Difficulty mid-test is a signal that you are winning, not losing. Expect it, and it loses its power to rattle you.
Three ground rules that never change:
- There is no guessing penalty. Never leave anything blank. A blind guess is worth 25%; a blank is worth exactly zero.
- Every question is worth the same. A monster question and a gift question each add one raw point. Never let a hard question steal time from three easy ones.
- Use the built-in tools. Bluebook gives you a question flag, an answer-eliminator (strike out choices), an annotation tool, and the Desmos calculator. Top scorers use all of them constantly.

The two-pass method: answer everything you can do confidently on pass one, flag anything that stalls you past about 90 seconds, and come back on pass two. Momentum protects both your score and your nerves.
Letter of the day: when time is nearly out and you must guess blind, pick one letter and use it for every remaining guess instead of scattering. It removes decision time and performs as well as anything else.
Part 2
The Math playbook
Desmos is your superpower. Treat it like one.
The built-in Desmos graphing calculator is the single biggest point-mover on the digital SAT Math section, and most students barely use it. Four plays to know cold:
- Solve any equation by graphing both sides. Type the left side as one equation and the right side as another; the x-value of the intersection is the solution. This works on radical, rational, absolute value, and exponential equations that are painful by hand.
- Crush systems of equations. Type both equations exactly as written (no rearranging needed) and click the intersection point. Two parallel lines that never meet? That is your "no solution" answer.
- Find vertices, zeros, and intercepts by clicking. Graph the function and Desmos marks the key points in gray. Minimum value, maximum height, x-intercepts: click and read.
- Check algebra instantly. If you solved by hand, plug your answer back in or graph to confirm. Ten seconds of verification saves careless points.
Practice this before Saturday: open desmos.com/calculator and rehearse those four plays until they feel automatic. Desmos only saves time if your fingers already know it.
Backsolve and plug in
- Backsolving: when the answers are numbers, test them in the problem instead of doing the algebra. Numeric choices are usually in order, so start with B or C: if it is too big or too small, you have eliminated two more choices for free.
- Picking numbers: when answers contain variables or the question is about percents with no starting value, invent a friendly number (100 for percents, 2 or 3 for variables), work the problem concretely, and find the choice that matches.
The short list worth knowing cold
- Discriminant: b² − 4ac. Positive means two real solutions, zero means exactly one, negative means none. "Exactly one solution" questions are discriminant questions in disguise.
- Vertex: x = −b/2a, or read it from vertex form y = a(x − h)² + k.
- Systems: no solution means same slope, different intercept; infinite solutions means one equation is a multiple of the other, right sides included.
- Factor theorem: (x − a) is a factor exactly when plugging in a gives zero. One substitution kills most "divisible by" questions.
- Circles: complete the square to reach (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r², and remember the right side is r squared, not r.
- Radians: arc length = rθ, sector area = ½r²θ, and 180° = π. Know 30/45/60/90 in radians on sight.
- Right triangles: 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 ratios, and sin of one acute angle equals cos of the other.
- Percent changes multiply: up 20% then down 25% is ×1.20 × 0.75, never +20 − 25.
- Mean problems: convert to totals immediately. Sum = mean × count, then add or remove values from the sum.
- Skew: the mean chases the tail. Right-skewed data (a few huge values) pulls the mean above the median.
The trap that costs the most points
Answering the wrong question. Hard-module writers love asking for x + 1 after you solve for x, asking for total time after you compute the second leg, or offering the sector area when they asked for arc length. Before clicking, reread the final sentence of the question and confirm your number answers exactly that sentence.
Fill-in (student-produced response) notes
About a quarter of Math questions have no answer choices. Negatives are allowed, fractions like 7/2 are fine and often easier than decimals, and if a question has more than one correct answer you only need to enter one. Do not waste time converting a clean fraction to a long decimal.
Part 3
The Reading & Writing playbook
Every R&W question is short and self-contained, and the section always runs in the same order: vocabulary and craft questions first, then reading comprehension, then grammar, then transitions and synthesis. Recognizing the question type tells you the play. That recognition is the whole strategy.
Words in Context
Predict before you peek. Cover the choices, read the sentence, and say your own word for the blank. Then find the choice closest to your prediction. The wrong answers are engineered to sound sophisticated; your prediction is engineered to fit the sentence. Watch the logic signals: "not X but Y" demands opposites, "though" and "despite" demand contrast, and a colon means the second half explains the first.
Inference and "logically completes the text"
The correct answer must be provable from the passage alone, and on hard questions it is usually the most cautious choice that still says something. Hedged wording like "may," "can," or "at least in this case" is a good sign; extreme wording like "always," "never," "proves," or "should be eliminated" is almost always wrong. If a choice needs an outside fact to be true, cut it.
Command of Evidence
Break the claim into its parts and demand that the evidence match every part. "Related to the topic" is the trap; "demonstrates the exact claim" is the answer. On data questions, anchor to the control or baseline first, and decide whether the claim is about percentage points (absolute) or percent change (relative) before touching the choices.
Punctuation (Boundaries)
One test resolves most of these: can each side stand alone as a complete sentence?
- Two complete sentences: join with a period, a semicolon, or a comma plus and/but/so. A comma alone is a comma splice, and it is always wrong.
- A complete sentence followed by a list or explanation: colon.
- Extra descriptive information: wrap it in a matching pair of commas, and never put punctuation inside the wrapper.
- Never separate a subject from its verb with a single comma, no matter how long the subject is.
- Its = possession, it's = it is. Each, every, either, and neither are singular.
Grammar (Form, Structure, and Sense)
Cross out the interrupter. The test parks a plural noun right before the verb to bait you ("The collection of letters, ledgers, and photographs..."). Strike the prepositional phrase, find the true subject, and match the verb to it. For opening modifiers, ask who is doing the action and put that doer immediately after the comma. For lists, keep every item in the same grammatical form.
Transitions
Ignore the choices at first. Read the sentence before and the sentence after the blank and label the relationship yourself: contrast, cause and effect, example, addition, or restatement. Then pick the transition in that family. On hard versions, check whether the contrast already happened one sentence earlier; do not pivot twice.
Rhetorical Synthesis (the bullet-point notes)
Read the goal sentence first, not the notes. The question names a specific job: emphasize a similarity, introduce the topic to an unfamiliar audience, stress a difference. Grade every choice against that job alone. All four choices are usually factually accurate, so accuracy eliminates nothing; only fit-to-goal does. "Unfamiliar audience" is code for "the right answer defines the term."
Part 4
The final 48 hours
- Take one timed module in Bluebook itself. College Board's official Bluebook app has full-length adaptive practice tests, and even one timed Reading & Writing or Math module teaches the interface, the flag tool, and the on-screen Desmos better than anything else. Official questions are the truest preview of Saturday.
- Review misses, not volume. With days left, one hour understanding ten missed questions beats three hours grinding a hundred new ones. For every miss, name the rule or trap in one sentence. If you can name it, you can catch it Saturday.
- Rehearse Desmos. Ten minutes on the four plays from Part 2.
- Protect two nights of sleep. Sleep on both Thursday and Friday nights is a genuine score input, worth more than a final late-night cram. Working memory and reading speed both run on it.
- Logistics tonight, not Saturday morning: admission ticket, photo ID, fully charged device if you bring your own, chargers, water, and a snack for the break. Know the drive time and add a cushion.
- Morning of: real breakfast, arrive early, and warm up your brain with two or three easy practice questions so the first real question is not the first question of your day.
- During the test: if a module feels hard, remember that is the upgraded module and it means you are doing well. Breathe out slowly, flag freely, and keep moving. You never need perfection; excellent scores come with several misses.
